If you are considering setting up your home based employees with EV chargers, then you might find the following information helpful.
- Home charging is cheaper than public charging plus it means less down time for employees, as each morning they can step in to a vehicle that is fully charged.
- 75% of EV owners charge their vehicle at home.
- Average pence per mile (ppm) costs; 20ppm - Public Charging Facilities, 8ppm - Home Charging, 2ppm - Home Charging using an off-peak tariff.
- A recent survey found that 60% of employers paid for EV chargers to be installed at their employees homes. 33% was funded by an interest free loan and 28% paid for outright.
- There is no Benefit in Kind if an employer pays for a charger to be installed at their employees home.
- Some employers set up a rental agreement with their employees, where if the employee leaves, the company has the right to remove the charger from the employees home.
- Employees must have off-road parking.
- If an employee rents, they must get written permission from their landlord before a charger is installed.
- A standard EV charger will charge at a rate of 7kW/h, which will deliver around 30 miles charge in an hour. A slower rate charger at 3.6kW/h will deliver around 15 miles charge in an hour. Finally if your employee can only charge via their standard plug socket at home, then this will only deliver around 8 miles charge in an hour.
- Employee reimbursement options;
- HMRC advisory rate of 9ppm, this is widely considered as too low and may not fully cover the actual cost of charging.
- HMRC plus an additional supplement is a flexible arrangement.
- Companies cover the actual cost of charging the vehicle. This can be a complex calculation because you have to consider business miles and private miles.
- Companies pay the employees utility bill direct (or a proportion of it).
