Some EV chargers have a cable permanently attached (tethered) and some chargers are just the charger box where you have to attach a cable every time you charge (untethered or sometimes called socket).
Which option you choose is down to personal preference. Some people feel the charger looks more tidy with no cable visible whilst others just like the ease of grabbing the cable from the charger and plugging it in to their car.
So, does cost play a part in your decision? When purchasing a charger we often see there is not a lot of difference in price between the two options, the tethered version can sometimes be around £20-£30 more expensive for a standard tethered cable of around 5m. You may even find you can buy a tethered or a non tethered charger for the same price.
The one thing you will have to factor is, if you buy an untethered charger you will need to purchase a cable separately. And this will cost around £100-£125 for a standard 5m cable.
So, if you don't have a strong preference for tethered or untethered, and you have a tight budget, then we would recommend you look at a tethered charger, where you can save approx. £75 from not having to buy the cable separately.
