Cost Debate: Electric Car v Petrol/Diesel

The price of an electric car is often mentioned as a challenge to the mass-adoption of battery-powered driving. In general, yes its true, at this moment electric cars are more expensive than a petrol or diesel vehicle.

However EV's are a lot cheaper to run than traditional cars, its cheaper to charge at home than to fill up at the petrol station (especially when using off-peak charging), cheaper to service (less moving parts) and you qualify for cheaper road tax. Once these factors have been considered, an electric vehicle will cost you less over the longer term, studies have shown.

Upfront costs are still a stumbling block for many, although we should start to see the cost of EV's coming down. The cheapest EV is beginning to come close to achieving price parity with petrol or diesel cars, used EV's are also becoming realistic propositions for those in the market with a smaller budget.

With internal combustion engine production set to stop in 2030, almost every automotive brand has an electric-focused strategy. With this in mind its inevitable that we will start to see a shift in vehicle costs as technology improves and automotive brands apply more focus to their EV range.

The future of mobility is electric and brands will fight for market share which can only be good news for the consumer.
